Team Xecuter Update Posted by Wraggster at 6:15 AM
Team Executer updated thier website with this cool news:
More Updates: We have two mods finished. Xecuter2 LITE and Xecuter2 PRO. The LITE version is basically the same design as Xecuter1 - with the new v2 Kernel and flash updateable by EVOX. Backwards compatible with the v1 console and working 100% with the new v1.1 console also. This will be a budget version for those who don't want too spend much and we will not be involved in the distribution of this mod due to the kernel being included. The PRO version is the design everyone's been talking about. This will not include any kernel but will be the most advanced Xbox Tool available, with switch able four x kernel mode, LPT programming, EVOX programming, PC controllable, 10 wire or 0 wire options, 100% external programming so never go back inside your Xbox again, 100% compatibility with the new X2 Kernel - Photographs of the prototypes will appear shortly.
Things are progressing nicely forthis new chip.

Xodux/ Matrix Announcement:! Posted by Sin-Tex at 22:16 PM
News Source: Xodus-Chip
So much has been announced i will only post a small bit:
"Whew!!! We cannot tell you how exciting and at the same time how utterly exhausting the past few weeks have been. WE NEED SOME SLEEP!!!
As most of you have gathered by now we have created quite a stir in the mod chip market and have been inundated with calls, emails and orders, so much so that we have battled to keep up with the unexpected flood.
The most important thing though is that through the majority of e-mails we have received (over 500 per day) we appear to have succeeded in our major objective which was to make a product which is and (will remain) second to none. We really would like to thank the thousands of positive and encouraging comments and compliments we have received e.g:"

X-Ecuter II News Posted by Sin-Tex at 21:31 PM
News Source: X-Ecuter
We can confirm that Xecuter2 will not be limited to one particular seller. From past experience one reseller can never satisfy a global market. Therefore anyone who wishes to distribute the device can do so, and you the customer have the option to choose who you do business with without any kind of pressure. This will also give opportunity for various resellers to give individual deals and offers - encouraging a healthy base for competition, this can only mean cheaper prices and faster delivery times. The first feedback was given today - one of the comments being "astonishingly easy to setup, clever yet simple design for external programming & control.

xSnes9x Subfolder Support Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:15 PM
News Source: xSnes9x
Lantus posted news that he has added subfolder support for b6:
"Sometimes i dont know when to quit. I know many of you have been asking for the ability to be able to separate roms into different folders, so tonight i added subfolder support for b6. Currently it will only allow one level of subfolder , but you can have as many subfolders as you like. i dont even know why people would want more than one subfolder level? anyway its gonna stay at one level deep for now and possibly for good.

FBA-X Beta 2 Reality Check! Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:04 PM

Over the past few days on irc and scanning various message boards it seems people have been asking why they cant find b2 because they are certain its been released. Its certainly news to us, we are ironing out a few more bugs and finishing off the changes we planned.

White XMAS - White XBOX ? Posted by Sin-Tex at 20:59 PM
News Source: GamePro
Is the Xbox too big and black for your tastes? We can't do anything about its size, unfortunately, but Sega is doing something about the color: starting next month they'll be taking orders for a limited edition Xbox system that's whiter than Pee-Wee Herman in his heyday. The new Xbox color is part of Sega's marketing campaign for Sega Direct, their newly-reorganized online shopping site (formerly called Dreamcast Direct). The system isn't exactly 100% white, though: it's themed after Panzer Dragoon Orta, so the top face features the PDO logo and a bit of the game's ancient-fossil designs. Not to mention that giant black Xbox "jewel," of course. The package also comes with a copy of the PDO game, along with an AV component pack and a special PDO dragon's-head necklace.
Unfortunately for gamers over here, this Xbox package will be rather difficult to get your hands on. Sega's only making 999 units, and they plan to sell them all off in online reservations beginning November 1. The system will cost 35,800 yen (about $287) and ships out to customers December 19. If you want one, we suggest finding a Japanese friend and a gigantic wad of cash very soon.

xSnes9x Progress Posted by Sin-Tex at 12:05 PM
News Source: xSnes9x
You may remember the 'Bugs Bugs Bugs' post i made some weeks ago which I mentioned a wierd SRAM bug when saving Uncharted Waters 2 and some issues with EA sports roms now loading, amongst other things.
Today, i took a break from the UI code and decided to delve into the main source and see if i could fix the SRAM problem. It turns out that another (surprise surprise) memory leak caused the problem with Uncharted Waters 2. If there are any other roms which dont save correctly this fix may take care of that issue.
Later, i was comparing build between the win32 and xbox versions. I noticed a few files in the win32 build which i didnt have in my project. So i investigate and realise that im using an older C code source for the CPU opcodes rather than a newer assembly equivalent. So i get to work and compile and add in the asm opcode object files to the project and exclude the older C source, fire up xSnes9x and notice that the problems with EA sports roms has gone, i test out other things to make sure nothing else has been broken and its all working fine. Even Out of this World and Clayfighters now load. After smacking myself for not picking this up earlier, im (almost) certain now that the xbox port is 1-1 equivalent in terms of compatability with the win32 version.
Excellent stuff, cant wait to play next release

Lik Sang is back! Posted by Sin-Tex at 16:16 PM
But you'll have to go somewhere else for modchips...
Lik Sang News
Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft vs. Lik Sang
"At September 16th a lawsuit against Lik Sang International Limited and it's directors has been filed in the High Court of Hong Kong by the companies Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft on infringing on copyrighted material and selling Mod Chips or other development and backup devices for the Plaintiffs consoles.
At September 17th, the High Court of Hong Kong issued Orders and Injunctions against Lik Sang which prevented selling or advertising Mod Chips (and other products in questions). The details outlined in those Injunctions took Lik-Sang.com and the company with more than 20 full-time employees "down" - business was officially closed till today. Lik Sang and it's employees couldn't even speak about the case due to an injunction of the High Court.
Lik Sang International Limited has removed all the products in questions from it's website and started it's business operation again by Tuesday, October 15th. Un-shipped orders will be processed in due course and the first shipments are scheduled to dispatch by November 1st. Customers with unshipped orders will receive emails with shipping & or cancellation information in the meantime. New orders are welcome.
Please note that Lik Sang International Limited has always sold the products in questions with the legitimate use in mind and the products haven't been considered as illegal. All the Court Orders have been issued before hearing a single word from the company. However, Lik Sang is not committed on selling the questioned products in the future."
Below is an approx e-mail copy of what customers of lik-sang have been sent.
"Dear valued customer,
thank you for contacting Lik-Sang.com, your specialist for finest videogames and accessories.
As you might know, we have been "shut down" by legal proceedings against us from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. We have been unable to conduct our business and reply any emails due to a (in our opinion wrongly issued) High Court Order which has been lifted by now. We do apologize for the inconvenience caused and we would like to point out we have taken immediate action to prevent further complications.
SHIPPING OF YOUR ORDER
If you do have an order which is still un-shipped, you will receive another email outlining the steps you have to take in order to receive your tracking number and shipping info. In most cases you can just sit back on relax, everything will happen automatically.
REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS
If your order contains mod chips or related products it has been cancelled already. If you wish to cancel any existing order that does not contain mod chips or related products please use the following URL. If you do not wish to cancel the order it will be shipped within the first two weeks of November, if available (if not sure, please check the product availability on our website)
Use this URL to cancel any existing order. Please do so by clicking on the appropriate order listed in your order history and scroll down until you see the "Cancel" button. www.lik-sang.com
Refunds for cancelled orders will be issued in the near future, we ask for your kind understanding that it takes some time for our accountants to work thru the affected transactions.
MOD CHIPS, FLASH ADVANCE LINKERS AND OTHER PRODUCTS IN QUESTION
Due to the legal proceedings of Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft against backup and development devices, we are unable to ship any products in question. We have removed all those products from our catalogue and orders for such items will be refunded in due course. You will receive another email outlining the procedure.
Best regards,"
Big Thanks to Lumpy for the news

Simple Tutorial on How to Fix Broken Traces by NetSurge
"Let me guess, your first words were "OH ****, I JUST LIFTED A TRACE". Then comes the shaking and the repeating of cretin words. But don't worry, with a little but of patience you can fix it. I myself lifted 2 traces on my X-Box motherboard in a freak accident, but with a little bit concentration and time I fixed it. So, Just recently I decided to write this tutorial. Please note that the pictures in this example are not that of an actual Xbox mobo, because I'm not going to re-fix my Xbox, but they will be very similar to the circumstances.
The tutorial consists of 3 sections:
1) Screw it! (Just get my X-Box back!)
2) Half Fix (Just get the mod working)
3) Full Fix (Get the whole shebang fixed)
You can read the full tutorial/guide here

Xbox Linux Team Cracked Xbox V1.1 Posted by Sin-Tex at 17:16 PM
News Source: XboxHacker.NET
"On behalf of the Xbox Linux Team (http://xbox-linux.sf.net), I am proud to announce that at 10:45BST the 'v1.1' secure version of the Xbox was proven to be running arbitrary BIOS code in a normal 256KByte modchip - with no additional hardware required. In short, in under a week we were able to normalize the new box to enable it to interoperate with Linux properly.
It seems that the Xecuter modchip people (http://www.x-ecuter.com) beat us to the punch by one day, and we are grateful for some hints they seem to have given us at the very end. But we fundamentally each got there on our own.
Work will now continue to integrate the new code into the Xbox Linux booting ROM.
Thanks to everyone who contributed their ideas and worked on the crack, both in Xbox Linux and on XBOXHACKER, we who are about to run Linux salute you!"

CXBX- 0.4.3 Released Posted by Sin-Tex at 20:54 PM
News Source: CXBX
This new version lets you patch .xbe files to allow usage of >64MB, and lets you toggle between debug/release mode. This could be pretty handy for you developers out there.
Also fixed a few relatively minor gui things, such as suggesting an appropriate name for saving an .xbe file, instead of just defaulting to "default.xbe".

Slashdotted: MS vs Lik Sang Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:33 PM
News Source: Slashdot
"CNET's News.com is running an article on Microsoft's legal manuevers which have successfully shut down the Lik Sang ecomm store where they've been selling various game system mod chips including the OpenXBox Mod Chip. This leads me to two questions (and I'll admit my ignorance, faux or not, in order to get discussion on this topic): 1) When a customer purchases an XBox (or any game system for that matter) are you intrinsically "signing" an end-user agreement in the purchase that makes modding the device illegal? 2) Could a non-profit org setup an effort to have mod chips produced and "distributed" at the cost of production w/o legal repurcussions? (i.e. would not making a profit on XBox's hardware mods protect you from their wrath?) 3) I understand the whole DRM aspect of mod'ing for playing copied games, BUT, what about legit gray-hacks like the Mandrake Linux XBox project and such? It would seem to me that in the long haul, Microsoft would support such efforts because they could sell more devices (and potentially more software if they licensed an opensource validation library)... BIOS RC4 in Xbox v2 Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:08 PM
News Source: XboxHacker.NET
Post by Numbnut:
"The Xbox Linux team have yesterday extracted the new MCPX ROM from this new box, and the new RC4 key for BIOS unpack (and unfortunately, a new BIOS hashing check in the ROM) is now known. The new 2bl and kernel have been unpacked. It took just eight hours from getting to box to getting the key.
The team working on the Xbox Linux BIOS have agreed that we will not be discussing any details of how we managed this, nor will we be issuing the key or other data outside our group. You can imagine, as the rest of our work is all GPLed and fully transparent, this is not because we are suddenly evil, but because of copyright issues and that we hope to reuse the techniques.
This news means that we will now be able to move on in attaining compatibility with the XBox Linux clean bootrom and the new model XBoxes. The bootrom sources will continue to be open as always."

Xbox Linux Mandrake 9 Released Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:42 PM
News Source: Xbox Linux
"This is the first full Linux distribution for the Xbox, which is 100% compatible with Mandrake Linux 9. The 350 MB installation CD includes Gnome, KDE and OpenOffice.org and installs in 10 minutes."
First Complete Linux Distribution for the Xbox Gaming Console
"Today the Xbox Linux Project (http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/) announced that Xbox Linux Mandrake 9 has been released. This is the first complete Linux distribution for the Microsoft Xbox gaming console.
A 350 MB installation CD of Xbox Linux Mandrake 9 is available for download free of charge from the Xbox Linux website. It corresponds to a standard installation of the (free) 3 CD version of the well-known Mandrake Linux distribution (http://www.mandrake.com/), which has only been released a week ago, so it contains the graphical environments Gnome and KDE, as well as software packages such as OpenOffice.org, XMMS and Mozilla. Since Xbox Linux Mandrake 9 is 100% compatible with Mandrake Linux 9, all additional packages from the official Mandrake Linux 9 installation CDs or the Mandrake website can be installed into Xbox Mandrake Linux.
To be able to use Xbox Linux Mandrake 9, you need a "modded" Xbox and a USB keyboard and mouse connected to the Xbox by a Xbox-USB adaptor, which can be easily built by most users.
With Xbox Linux Mandrake, the Xbox gaming console is just as powerful as any comparable PC with Mandrake Linux 9. It can be used for office applications, the internet, e-mail, Linux games, or even as a web, file or database server.
Mandrake Linux was chosen as the base for our distribution for various mostly technical reasons. We have no affiliation with MandrakeSoft, the creators of Mandrake Linux.
This is an important milestone for the Xbox Linux Project, which aims to provide an easy to use and highly compatible Linux distribution for the Xbox gaming console, to give Xbox users the freedom to do anything with the console they have paid for, instead of being restricted to gaming."

Progressive Scan Patcher Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:27 PM
News Source: XboxDeveloper.NET
Here is the first version of "Progressive Scan Patcher" for games that do not support progressive scan mode. I tried it successfully on the Dashboard, The Thing and DVD RegionX. It's been reported to work on Hitman2 too, you need a modded Xbox and the ability to make a backup of your game or running it from HD. Using the patcher on a file called Default.xbe will ouput a new file called Default.xbe.patched replace your game Default.xbe with that one (remove the ".patched" )and it should autodetect if progressive mode can be used. Enjoy.
Project Description: A PC tool that allows you to patch xbe files to make them compatible with progressive scan displays (i.e. HDTV and true VGA converters). Tested on several XBox games, homebrew or MS (Dasboard and onlinedash). It allows progressive scan DVD playback if applied to DVD RegionX or MS Dashboard.

XBMP Suspended? Posted by HyperG at 1:17 AM
People all over the net have been griping about the recent suspension of the project. RUNTiME has explained here that the project is just temporarly being put on hold, it does not mean the project is dead. Recently people such as myself have been receiving e-mails about some of the stuff being used that is GPL'ed. Some points have been missed by those people that have sent us e-mails, and it is explained in the link mentioned earlier, or just click here to read the full story.

cxbx 0.4.1 Posted by Sin-Tex at 17:24 PM
News Source: XboxDeveloper.NET
Mew in this version is the simple fact that most software you run with the emulator exits safely. this happens very quickly and you will see no audio/video. please don't email me trying to figure out how to play Halo or some such nonsense, as cxbx doesn't play games yet.

Choice and Freedom Act of 2002 Posted by Sin-Tex at 20:55 PM
Source: XboxHacker.NET
Found this cool bit of news on XboxHacker.NET
"Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren's Digital Choice and Freedom Act of 2002 is probably the first proposed law concerning copyright law in the last few years that makes any sense. It would basically allow you to make legal copies of copyrighted works for fair use purposes, regardless of what format the work has been released in and whether it's protected by anti-copy measures or not, thus restoring balance between copyright holders and customers. Needless to say the movie and music industry is violently objecting to this act which is not surprising considering that they are sponsoring laws that make any copying illegal."

Xbox 64MB Ram Upgrade Posted by Sin-Tex at 20:51 PM
News Source XboxHacker BBS
Dysfunction has succeeded in installing 64MB of extra Ram into the xbox, thus giving him a 128MB Xbox.
"As some people may remember from way back when, I'd ordered some SDRAM chips to attempt to upgrade an Xbox to 128MB using the spare pads on the board. Rather than the 2 weeks quoted it took over 2 months to get the parts and then vacation/work got in the way. Finally I installed the new SRAMs into the Xbox last night.
The installation & operation of the devices presented no problems, just some careful cleanup of the pads and soldering of the new SDRAMs, it worked first time.
I now have a 128MB Xbox, I've verified the addional memory with some code I wrote, I can allocate/test 121MB of RAM, no problems, BUT, isnt there always a BUT:
1. Applications need to be compiled such that the 64MB memory limit flag needs to be NOT set. 2. You must have the debug BIOS loaded onto the board, the machine will work/boot OK but you wont see the additional 64MB"

Xsnes9X Dev Upaate Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:17 PM
News Source: Xsnes9X
I' ve merged the core emulation engine to the latest Snes9xMk code which contains the new SPC7110 chip emulation and quite a few new compatability fixes. I'm still working hard to get Far East of Eden Zero up and running. Anyway as a result of the update a few more DSP-1 titles are working.
This also takes care of the FF Mystic Quest issue also - its fully playable now.
I'm also working on a config menu for b6 which will eliminate all those damn buttons you had to memorize in b5 to navigate around the menu and generally make things easier.
Lik-Sang brought down by MS Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:10 PM
Saw this news mentioned over at Xbox Scene
News Source:CNET NEWS.com
"Microsoft appears to have shut down one of the world's largest distributors of "mod chips"--gray-market add-ons that allow Microsoft's Xbox and other video game consoles to play pirated games.
A representative in Microsoft's Australian subsidiary confirmed that the company has taken legal action against Hong Kong-based Lik Sang.
Lik Sang's Web site has been offline for nearly two weeks, with a notice on the site blaming a server outage.
Lik Sang representatives could not be reached for comment, and Microsoft attorneys were unavailable to explain the exact nature of the legal action. "

Xodus/Matrix Review Posted by Sin-Tex at 22:02 PM
News Source: XboxHacker.NET
Xodus/Matrix Review by iretch
An XboxHacker.NET in-depth review by iretch
Package contents: -1 Modchip -1 Programmer -1 Locking washer
First thoughts: Received the package- a stiff cardboard envelope with thick bubble padding in the inside. The envelope was somewhat smooshed up and I feared the chip might be damaged, but upon opening I found that it was perfectly okay. I suggest to Easybuy to perhaps use better packaging for such a thick object in the future, something might get damaged.
First thing I noticed was the overall build quality of the mod and programmer is excellent, feels very solid. The mod is noticeably more intricate than any so far. The main part of the unit is the SST 49lf020, a 256k (2mbit) chip (A native LPC chip) in PLCC packaging which supports both LPC and Parallel programming modes. This means the chip is able to be programmed through software on the Xbox, an excellent feature and one that is unique to the Xodus. The spring loaded pins on the bottom of the mod are gold plated, and seem to be of good quality. The tips on the pins are rounded, like a ball point pen, and give under pressure to ensure as close to a perfect fit as possible. There is a secondary chip which controls the LEDs for testing and diagnostics, it is not a controller like on other mods.
