Aussie mod- chip sales ban
Posted by Sin-Tex at 12:02 PM

News Source: The Register

Australia is now officially under the thumb of the mod-chip banners, after the Court of Appeal, accepted its argument that mod-chips should be made illegal.

Mod chips enable games console players to overcome protection built into their machines to run imported games bought legitimately and to back up games legitimately. But they also facilitate the playing of pirated games too.

For a short time, selling mod chips in Australia was legal - officially, following a court ruling last July. Sony had filed a suit against a Sydney mod-chip trader, Eddy Stevens.

FCEUltra v8
Posted by Wraggster at 0:22 AM

Xport has released a new updated version of his Nes emu for the Xbox, heres whats new:

What's New :

- Sound and video hiccups should be gone

- Fixed bug where screenshots were not showing up in favorites list

- Fixed bug with loading games across network share with filename length > 42

- Default skin by boo_se updated to include animation on the loading screen.
Overwrite the existing skin dir with the new contents of this package.
Then, from the main menu, select "Select Skin" and reload the skin.

- Skin System Update:
+ Removed specific variable for amount of time to delay on loading screen
+ Added general variable to *all* menu configuration screens to specify
how long to let animation loop before giving control to the user.
This is useful for instances where you want some animation to run before
the user can do anything.

Kawa-X v0.11
Posted by XDelusion at 2:27 AM

WHAT'S NEW
v0.11
=====
- Added lowpass filter for sound. Toggle it from the in game menu
- Disabled that Start+Back shortcut to exit games.
Some people were exiting games by accident.
Now if you want to exit a game, you have to use the ingame menu
(right thumb click)
- Applied some XBE version patching on the executable. That may fix issues
some people have had with the emu not starting ?

- Configurable rompath. Just edit rompath.ini

- Kawa-X now stores on the HD what romsets you have or haven't
so now, there is only a scan the first time you launch the emu.
That should fix the problem people have had with the emu
taking ages to boot up. It will only take ages the first time :)
If you want to force a rescan, hit the X button on the game list.
- Fixed some problems with the provided CLRmame and RomCenter dat files
I provide with the emu. Files inside NEOGEO.ZIP were reported with the
wrong names in some places.

By the way if people have problems starting Neogeo games they should check
the following:
In their NEOGEO.ZIP:
NG-LO.ROM should be named 000-LO.LO
NG-SFIX.ROM should be named SFIX.SFX
NEO-GEO.ROM should be named SP-S2.SP1

Kawa-X
Posted by XDelusion at 18:36 PM

From NFO file:

Kawa-X is the XBox port of a Windows emulator I made some time ago named
Kawaks.
It allows to play titles from the Capcom CPS1, CPS2 and SNK NeoGeo library.
Pretty much all games are supported, even these 90mb monsters that would
normally not fit into the XBox's limited 64mb RAM. (This emu includes a
significant amount of black magic :P) For the more recent encrypted NeoGeo
games, though, only the decrypted form is supported (64Mb of RAM won't allow
to do the decryption). Kawaks (PC version) can produce decrypted sets, if you
only have encrypted versions...
See the included list of supported titles for more info...

There's the following goodies waiting inside :
- CPS1, CPS2, NeoGeo support (doh)
- Plenty of nice eye candy video filters (more about that later)
- Redefinable controls (including handy macros like keys to do 3 punches, etc)
- Can save screenshots
- Savestates (8 slots per game)
- You can play NeoGeo games either in arcade mode or in console mode
- You can switch region (language settings) for every supported CPS2 game.
For example, that means you can play the normally japanese only Mighty Pang
in english if you want...

Xport has quickly released an update to his port of Visual Boy Advance to the Xbox, heres whats new:

That FPS stuff is actually slightly impacting the actual FPS of the games.
I was using it for testing purposes and I completely forgot about it.
I am aware that certain games like Tactics Ogre crash in XBox and not PC version. I'm looking into it.

From the readme file:

Let me first apologize for the atrocious time between releases. I've been wanting to update this for like ever. Real life unfortuately has first dibs on me, and I program for a living. So programming more when I get home is sometimes very tough to get motivated for. Anyone who is in my field I'm sure can sympathize. Anyhow, I found some time about a week
ago and decided to get some additions into it. I still have a few more things left I wanna wrap up, so Im hoping to release another version soon (without a year passing ;) )

Posted by XDelusion at 5:57 AM

>> What's new/fixed:
* Enabled writeback caching for > 64 megs (Games should be playable on 128mb Xboxes)
* Exiting from a ROM to the ROM list should now be MUCH faster. For some, this was taking from 10 seconds to several minutes.
* Added code to allow 4 ROM paths
* Changed it so romstatus.xml file is only parsed when scanning for new ROMs. This decreases load time between ROMs for large XML files.
* Added public function to force reload the rom status file
* Fixed Backup feature (yet again, this is what, the 3rd time I broke it? I'm still surprised that people use it :))
* Added code to allow 4 ROM paths
* Changed the text for "problem ROM" filters
* Changed backup feature to use CopyFile, as it was broken in the change to multiple ROM paths (break #4 :)). For some reason MoveFile craps out when I try to move across partitions (or maybe just different logical drive letters)

PCSX Xbox v7
Posted by Wraggster at 20:56 PM

Xport has released a new version of his port of the Playstation emulator PCSX to the Xbox console, heres whats new:

- Fixed freezing during loading of XBE (see below)
- Fixed freezing during loading of game (see below)
- Press Y from any file listing to go up one directory
- Settings files (STG) will be saved with graphics filter now.
The settings file format should remain static.
- Background Music should stay stopped or stay started when
entering/exiting a game now.
- New Configure Skin menu option - Show Available Memory
Shows how much memory is currently available.
Please remember that sometimes an emulator will allocate memory the
first time it is run - so when you are making a skin be sure to run
the emulator at least once before determining how much memory you have
left for your skin.
- Small change to Samba routine - but it's not likely it changes much.

Theres no official site but you can check out a page Here with all the information so far about this emulator.

Xbox Sales Totals
Posted by Wraggster at 21:18 PM

Seen this interesting bit of news over at Xbox Rules.Com

According to EGM(as of 6/26) and some recent information from my inside sources, I have discovered the following sales statistics:

PS2: 51.2 million sold
Xbox: 13 million sold
GC: 9.4 million sold

This was over a month ago, but the most recent sales tally available, however Microsoft plans to release their fiscal sales totals within the coming weeks.

Only 5-6 months, prior to these sales figures, the Xbox was at 9 million. Strong sales indeed, over 50% increase in sales in 4 of the slowest months of gaming. In March Microsoft was believed to have said they did not expect another 1 million units sold by the end of June.

Don't forget, this is a "somewhat old" report and the figures may just be a rumor, but as always it's news, especially with Microsoft's upcoming fical year report!

...and more SDL news.

libSDLx V1.2 - Xbox Release V0.01
Posted by XDelusion at 13:55 PM

>> From The readme:
[QUOTE]
This is a Xbox port of SDL. More information can be located at http://www.libsdl.org or http://www.lantus-x.com/SDLx for the Xbox version.

Notes
-----
- SDL and SDLMixer have been combined into one lib
- No Vorbis/OGG support (yet) - do people want this?
- if your SDL application uses MP3 support, you need to link libSMPEGx.lib in your target application. (For some reason trying to link libSMPEGx.lib in the libSDLx project causes INTERNAL COMPILER ERROR).
- SDL encapsulates Xbox API functionality. For example video routines create its own DirectX device, sound creates is own DSound device etc. So trying to mix xbapp.cpp etc and SDLx is bad news. The whole point of SDL is to provide a nice interface and portable code across platforms.
- Remember if you decide to port an existing SDL app/game/demo/emulator you must provide source code as per GPL.

Any problems with the lib contact me or discuss your issues on my SDLx forum at http://www.lantus-x.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=9.

I wont bother reading issues about how to compile code etc.

Finally if anyone has knowledge in setting up CVS to host the source contact me.

SDL Coming To The Xbox !
Posted by Wraggster at 21:54 PM

Lantus the author of Xsnes9X amongst other things for the Xbox now has a new project in the works, heres what he says on his new site:

welcome to the new section
as people may be aware , i have been working on a SDL library to the Xbox console.
current status: 85% complete with gamepad routines and yuv overlays still outstanding. Other than this the lib is fully functional and supports all SDL functions including CDDA audio, MP3 and full mouse and keyboard support.
Over the past few months compiling up SDL demos and sample apps to test my lib and i am at the point where im satisfied enough to think about releasing it out to the public in the near future.
"Your lying SDL isnt possible on the Xbox!" - Incorrect, infact if you have been keeping track - RoTT and Duke3d use SDL Mixer routines which were initially ported to enable MIDI music from those games. SarienX uses SDL for its graphics rendering and keyboard handler. Team Avalaunch also use libSDLx for their MOD/S3M/XM/IT (and soon MP3 and CDDA) routines via SDLMixer.
how will libSDLx be distibuted? Source code will be freely available (as per GPL) and pre-created libs should be available from the usual places although im still deciding this.
why SDL? - quote from the SDL page "Simple DirectMedia Layer is a cross-platform multimedia library designed to provide level access to audio, keyboard, mouse, joystick, 3D hardware via OpenGL, and 2D video framebuffer. It is used by MPEG playback software, emulators, and many popular games, including the award winning Linux port of "Civilization: Call To Power"
Ultimately - to be added as part of the official SDL CVS is where i am aiming. The source is certainly clean enough for this but this will need to be discussed with the SDL authors and see what their wishes are.

xSnes9x -v1.05 Info + Happy B'day
Posted by Sin-Tex at 19:19 PM

News Source: xSnes9x

Lantus has posted news about the upcoming release of xSnes9x v1.05.
Tomorrow also happens to be the 1st Birthday of xSnes9x, on Wednesday 10th July 2002 Lantus released the first Alpha Version.
Greets to Lantus :)

QUOTE:
people are probably wondering what the delay is with the new version. Theres a few reasons, ill explain:

- In all honesty, xSnes9x is pretty close to as good as you will get. Theres no real reason to do monthly updates anymore, so i will only be releasing on major updates or "emergency" type fixes.

- There is a new Snes9x release coming out really soon 1.40, i am holding off on any changes until that has been released and any kinks have been ironed out. Its looking good and i cant wait to bring all the new code across to the Xbox.

- Burned out. I've been a little burned out and needed to take a break for a while.

The new release will have quite a few game fixes, as well as the DSP-2 chip emulation (Dungeon Master) and updated DSP-1 emulation. I believe, although im not 100% sure it will make it into the Windows release, that the APU code has been rewritten.

There are also a string of bugs fixed - the changelog is quite large some of which ive mentioned before (cheat codes), some which are new.

On top of this for my port, ive implemented:

- LightGun support for Superscope Games and Justifier (Lethal Enforcers!).
- Nintendo Mouse emulation support using USB Mice.
- Added some rendering filters - Simple and AdvanceMame.
- MOD/S3M/XM/IT/MP3 background music support if you didnt like SID tunes.
- The ability to shortcut to roms via evox (command line parameters).
- SMB support for loading roms remotely
- Other things that may/may not make the final cut.

Other than this - I havent messed around with the UI very much because i like the way its turned out in V1.04. I think (its been a while) i fixed some Progressive Scan problems but i will revisit it.

So stay tuned - things will ramping up again.

Oh and xSnes9x turns 1 year old soon :)

Duke and ROTT Updates soon!
Posted by XDelusion at 2:22 AM

This is not a release statement, but I have heard from Lantus himself that he has continued work on the almighty Duke, and has wiped out many of the bugs that plaqued the Easter release, and has also added Keyboard and Mouse support! Expect a release soon.

Also Keyboard and Mouse support will be added to Rise Of The Triad as well.

Not bad at all, thankx again Lantus!

MAMEoX v0.71.1b
Posted by XDelusion at 3:51 AM

>> What's new/fixed (most notable changes):

* Integrated MAME core 0.71
* Switched to a more aggressive handling of silent XBE dependencies. This change frees up almost another megabyte of RAM, which will hopefully get a couple more games working. This will undoubtedly break games that used to work until they are reported and thrown into the new families, but it gives up about a meg of RAM.
To anyone who just read through that paragraph, please pardon the yelling:
THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE THAT THIS BUILD WILL BREAK SOME ROMS THAT WORKED BEFORE! THIS IS A CONSEQUENCE OF AN AGGRESSIVE STRATEGY TO RECLAIM A LITTLE MORE RAM. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE REPORT ANY ROMS THAT HANG/CRASH!!
Just had to make sure that everybody gets at least that part, if you guys don't report the bugs, I don't find them and can't fix them for you :)
* Added a START menu to the Launcher. Many actions that were previously accomplished via shortcuts are now performed by pressing "START" and selecting an item in the menu.
* Integrated new graphics from r4dius and cleaned up the layout of the help/options screen.
* Fixed a problem where BIOS games were hidden when "clones"
were filtered out
* Added several ROM filter/sorting options, these may be changed via the Options menu. Filtering is toggled with the BLACK button.
* Put in support for rom colorization/filtering on ROMSTATUS.XML (This file will become available to the general public when the new site goes live). See the addendum below for info on the format of this file for the adventurous testers out there :)
* Fixed the problem where moving a ROM to the backup directory
would not remove it from the ROM list cache file.
* Changed the functions in the MAME core that ask for memory to use a wrapper function where we can properly catch out of memory conditions. This makes the system far more stable, and as a bonus, we can print out a sensible error message (Out of memory) instead of asking you guys to learn the 20 different messages that really just mean "Out of Memory"
* Added VSYNC option
* Added frame throttling option
* Increased autoframeskip reliability
* Removed history.dat support (we might add support in the Launcher in the future, but in-game history is probably out of the question, sorry for getting everybody's hopes up w/ the last release).

Pcsxbox V4 released
Posted by Deviance at 0:16 AM

>> From Xport
[QUOTE]
This is a completely new UI which I plan on incorporating into most of my other releases. I tried to include as much customization and as many features as possible, but I'm sure there will still be changes and additions that people will want to see. Please provide feedback on the xbox-scene.com emulation forums so that this UI can be refined and then placed into the other ports.
What's New :
* Customizable skins
-Backgrounds
-Sounds
-Background Music
-Sprites
-Text position (right/left/center, top/bottom/center)
-Text color, select bar color
-Font
-Fading speed
-Screenshot position
-If you want to change the way something looks in this new UI, chances are that you can change it via the Configuration menu.
* Default Castlevania:SOTN skin gives example of what you can do.
* Netplay (2 players)
* Samba/NetBIOS support (read CD images from your PC)
* Every single in-game command is fully customizable on any of the four joypad controllers.
* Map any emulator or UI command to a single button or a combination of two buttons. (e.g. RTrigger+LTrigger = Save State)
* Autofire capabilities for any emulator button on any controller
* One-button combos (define a series of emulator commands to be played back when you press a user-definable XBox controller combination.) (E.g. Press RTrigger+LTrigger to run the series of commands that will cast Soul Steal in Castlevania)
* Traverse any directory on any drive ( Continue selecting the parent directory entry on the file selection list to get the drive selection list. Selectable drives are C, D, E, F, R, X, Y, Z, and SMB. R is the CDROM drive. SMB is the samba share you have defined in your pcsx.ini file.)
* 10 save state slots
* Take in-game screenshots which can later be browsed and can also be viewed on the game-selection list.
* All UI commands (save state, load state, screenshot, etc) can be invoked from the Options/Pause menu as well as in-game via your customized joypad mappings.
* New graphics filters :
-2xSai
-Super 2xSai
-Eagle
-Super Eagle
-SuperScale
-AdvanceMame 2x
-Simple 2x
* Can be invoked from a command-line to directly run a game from a front-end or dashboard and bypass the user-selection screens. (Only if the frontend or dashboard supports this feature.)
* Can return to the launching program *if* the launching program supports this feature. For example, if the custom-launch routines are incorporated into a new frontend, that frontend could launch PCSXBox and when you exit PCSXBox, that frontend can be automatically reloaded.
* Support for M3U playlists of MP3 files. (Currently only supports MP3 files) (Can also read MP3/M3U from across Samba shares.)
* Favorites list
* Save Game management - delete save game files
* CD-Changing should hopefully be fixed
* Schmoke and a pancake

What's Not New:
* Compatibility - this version does not fix or break any games from v2/v3.
