Source: Xodus Team
The Xodus Team has announced the release of "Chameleon." The chip can be used as a solderless 1Mb add-on to the Matrix or can be used without the Matrix as a solder modchip.
The long awaited 1 meg adapter is done, tested and working beautifully!! We have decided to give it our own pet name which describes its versatility, flexibility and unique qualities.
Meet “Chameleon”

Weather you are using it as a Matrix Add-on or stand alone chip, the hardware has been designed to offer you limitless options for the future.

FBAx B3 update Posted by Sin-Tex at 0:35 AM
News Source: Final Burn-X
Just to let you all know that I am still about. I have been (and still am)looking for a new job, hence why I have not been able to help Lantus much with the upcoming B3 release. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to devote a reasonable amount of time to B3.
Just to recap on the things that I want to add for the next version (this is not exhaustive and doesnt include any of the cool things Lantus will no doubt add to the next verson):
Save states Support for the FBA cheat files EEPROM settings will be saved
Improved video rendering
Things that won't be in the next version (Anything in this list will very likely not be added to the next version, at least by me)
Sega/Neogeo/other system Support: This cannot be added until the FBA team release a version of FBA with the driver included (no idea when this will be, so please don't ask) Netplay: This would be a cool feature but is unlikely to happen anytime soon
Tuesday, 28, January, 2003xSnes9x 1.05 Info Posted by Sin-Tex at 14:15 PM
News Source: xSnes9x
Lantus has updated his site with some dev update info regarding xSnes9x v1.05.
Fixed most of the annoying 1.04 bugs, including the issue selecting HDTV modes when you didnt have the proper adapter for it and you'd be starting at a black screen forever until you deleted the .ini file yada yada
Mentioned this in my forums - ive been playing with the very excellent xboxmediaplayer and SMB shares. Im very impressed with it and will be looking at implementing it in xSnes9x so you can load your roms remotely from a windows shared drive. This should also eliminate file length issues associated with copying files over to your xbox hdd. Need to say thanks to the XBMP dev team, without them none of this would be possible of course.
Monday, 27, January, 2003XB-FTP v0.61 released Posted by HyperG at 3:42 AM
TJ has released a new version of XB-FTP, featuring the abilty to update XB-FTP through XB-FTP! Here is what's new and fixed.
fixed the dirsize listings a bit, bugs when it needs to read dirsizes on both sides. in honor of a huge file I was downloading - I've added resume and skip file on download ( still on test phase ) stopped the options 7 byte memleak added more dynamics into harddisk mounting (look at ini-file), it's directly linked to my attempts to get 2 harddisks working in the xbox (require non-dvd bios) fixed so editor actually starts on F4 fixed keyboard on change dir, rename and a few others. Blink as well as return and escape added to mark files ( yea I simply loved norton commander's style in the DOS days ) switched to savegame 0x080275da - I was drunk during some of the releases and accidentaly made it use 0x080275ad - which would cause your serverlist to "disappear" (sorry about that, 080275da from now on) added DNS lookup, with and autodetection if it's been given a IP or something that gotta go through DNS. Changed the server-add from using numpad on ip - to keyboard. A bit more hassle when adding ip's, but I didn't see many options with DNS names. Added manual update from random servers with a proper encryption set.
Added the option to change various colors

Friday, 24, January, 2003Project B Prize Rules Posted by Sin-Tex at 23:39 PM
News Source: Xbox Linux Project
Overview As the goal of the original Project B of the Xbox Linux Award has not been met, this part of the award will be extended until December 31st 2003. Furthermore, the rules will be extended, so that solutions that use very different methods can be awarded as well.
The Microsoft Xbox is a PC-like gaming console that uses public key cryptography to prevent the user from running executables that have not been authorized by Microsoft. That is, the user buys PC hardware, but does not get the possibility to run applications Microsoft does not like, such as the GNU/Linux operating system. So, although the user has paid for his hardware, Microsoft controls which software can be used and the result is a Microsoft-only PC.
Hardware modifications exist that give the user the possibility to run arbitrary code back, but these require opening the Xbox.
The goal of Project B is to make it possible to run Linux on a Microsoft Xbox console without a so-called modchip. A total of US$ 100,000 will be awarded by Michael Robertson ("donor").

Thursday, 23, January, 2003XDeck Prototype - IDE update Posted by Sin-Tex at 11:24 AM
News Source: X-Deck
The XDeck prototype is being split to go into two directions.
v0.01 - A basic IDE with isolation switch that is controlled via USB connection.
v0.02 - An advanced IDE to IDE bridge that allows up to 5 drives to be connected on a single IDE channel.
The first version that will be released will be v0.01 becouse it will be the cheapest to produce, hence lower retail cost. v.0.02 will be a bit tricky as I have not found anything remotly similar anywere. I am desinging it to be modular with v0.01 so it will be an upgradable option for the early adopters.
THE "Phantom" ? Posted by Sin-Tex at 0:56 AM
News Source: GamesIndustry
Not xbox related exactly, but it could be a contender for Microsofts xbox. Here's some news about a new console that might just be the new kid on the block by end of this year.
A Florida-based startup firm, Infinium Labs, has announced its intention to launch a new broadband-enabled console in the US games market by the end of the year which will compete directly with the offerings from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
The system, codenamed "Phantom", will be unveiled in March and released commercially in November. Information about it is sparse at the moment, but the company makes bold claims for the system - namely that it will be the fastest console on the market, will have the largest selection of games of any system, and will have an advanced gaming on demand system tailored for broadband users.

OzXFlash released Posted by HyperG at 4:27 AM
Want a software based app for Xbox that programs your xbox mod chip? Here is your solution, here is the description about the latest legal solution for your xbox.
The Australian XBox team known as Team OzX have packaged a boot CD called "OzXFlash" (based on Andy Green's Raincoat), this cd when used with the OzXChip LPC modchip will allow you to flash any bios onto your OzXChip by simply booting to the CD which is based on the Linux operating system for the XBox. To remain completely legal the OzXChip is shipped with the Cromwell bios so no Microsoft code is used at all for this programming innovation.
The first release of OzXFlash has been tested on both V1.0 and V1.1 XBox consoles, the current OzXFlash release requires a bios file to be burnt onto a seperate CD. Although development is currently in progress to allow for a bios selection menu as well as downloading of bios files from ftp and web servers.
Thanks to the developers of this program sending me the e-mail!

Saturday, 18, January, 2003Microsoft haggles over Xbox 2 components ! Posted by Sin-Tex at 23:11 PM
News Source: Ferrago.co.uk
According to a suggestion from Dundee Securities, graphics hardware firm ATI are well positioned to become the supplier of the graphics chip for the next generation of the Xbox.
Microsoft are however, keen to date both ATI and NVIDIA to encourage a little competition in the price stakes. ATI also provide the graphics chips for the Nintendo GameCube, whilst NVIDIA provided the advanced visuals enjoyed by the current Xbox.
Microsoft is also rumoured to be generating competition between Intel and AMD as to who will supply the CPU, once again, this can only benefit their bottom line further. More news on this kind of idle speculation and conjecture as we get it.

Neo Xbox
Challenge Update ! Posted by Sin-Tex at 0:53
AM
News Source: The Neo
Project
Project Update:
The Neo Project is
committing 100% of its client resources to factoring the X-Box/2048
bit encryption key.
Factoring of the X-Box encryption key is
fully compliant with sections 1201(c), 1201(f), 1201(g) and 1201(i)
of the DMCA governing circumvention of copyright protection systems
and other applicable law.
The Neo Project deems this effort
socially responsible and of great practical import for the following
reasons:
Distributed Computing research requires a large
volunteer pool to maximize information return and contribute to our
knowledge in the areas of DC client-server communication and
operational efficiency. The X-Box encryption key is an attractive
real-world "target" likely to draw a large volunteer pool while
preserving third-party intellectual property rights;
Factoring of the RSA challenges to date has shown that
theoretical security margins for large keys are dramatically
different than real-world security margins. In particular, the
RSA-140 challenge took 1 month of sieving at a cost of 8.9 CPU
years. The RSA team estimated that the RSA-155 factoring should be
7.2 times harder in terms of time. In fact, the RSA-155 factoring
was accomplished in 3.7 months at a cost of 35.7 CPU years. It was
only 4 times harder, all things otherwise being equal.
Just
how secure is a 2048 bit key? No one, except perhaps a government,
really knows. The Neo Project intends to find out.
Why is
this important? No one uses 600 bit keys in their security
implementations anymore. Even e-mail is secured with 2048 bit keys.
Your bank may rely on this encryption to protect your money.
Networks may rely on this level of encryption to prevent access to
public utilities and telecommunications. Factoring of the X-Box key
has research and social implications well beyond interest in the
game console. The right to engage in encryption research is governed
by 1201(g) of the DMCA. The Neo Project will comply with the
provisions of that subsection in the course of this project.
What will The Neo Project do with the key if it successfully
factors it? First and foremost, The Neo Project will not violate any
laws nor infringe anyone's intellectual property rights. There is no
intention to publicly release the key. Notwithstanding that,
acquisition of the key will enable The Neo Project and others to
engage in legal research under section 1201(f) and section 1201(i)
of the DMCA.
Section 1201(f) entitles a person to circumvent
a technological measure for research purposes to achieve
interoperability of an independently created computer program with
other programs. This is the right to "reverse-engineer" for
compatibility purposes. What implication this may have for those
intending to operate Linux systems on the X-Box remains
undetermined.
Section 1201(i) entitles circumvention of a
technological measure if that measure, or the program it protects,
contains the capability to collect or disseminate personally
identifying information reflecting the online activities of a
person. X-Box Live is just now being released to the public.
Nevertheless, The Neo Project is unaware of any Micrsoft statement
declaring the X-Box incapable of these measures. In contrast, the
work of Andrew Huang while at the MIT Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory, reflects that the serial number of the game console is
electronically stored and "probably accessible to the kernel." This
serial number, coupled with registration information, presents
significant privacy issues for those participating on the Microsoft
X-Box Live network. Decryption of the bootloader and kernel will aid
in alleviating these privacy concerns and is fully compliant with
the intent of section 1201(i).
While The Neo Project
recognizes that people in the DC community will have differences of
opinion regarding this project, we welcome all contributors
interesting in helping us reach our goal and answer these
questions.

Project X-Deck is an IC controlled IDE switch for
Microsoft's XBox entertainment system. Once completed it will allow
a gamer to switch between the original hard drive and up to three
other internal drives while maintaining the XBox look and feel. This
will also include an option to switch to a secondary DVD drive.
Finally it will include a communication port that will allow for mod
chips to access the drive switching
automatically.
Planned Features:
Manual/Automatic switching between up to 4 hard drives.
Manual/Automatic switching between 2 DVD drives.
Two Front Side USB Ports.
Built in switching for today's mod chips (Disable/Enable &
Flash Protect/Unprotect) ---- If the Mod chip is disabled then
the next boot will set the Original DVD & Hard drive as
active.

Neo Xbox
Challenge Update ! Posted by Sin-Tex at 23:46
PM
GOOD NEWS:
Well it
looks as though it will be legal to proceed with the Xbox
Challenge.
Encryption research is secondary to our goal of
distributed computing model research. We will be sending notice to
Microsoft seeking "authorization to conduct the research". Once that
is settled we will continue the challenge. This will also give us a
little more time so that we can finish the long awaited release of
our Linux version.
BAD NEWS: In the early
days of the project we were able to keep most of our users happy.
Until recently we only had around 2,000 participants, and is very
difficult to keep everyone happy. We have realized that no matter
what decisions we make someone will always be upset. We will try our
best to keep things good for everyone- Please see the following
paragraph.
~OK~ NEWS: We will be
completing the "First Stage" of the RSA challenge by introducing a
new algorithm to Neo. The results will take longer to complete and
will be calculated drastically different then before. We will be
hosting a poll in the forums for everyone’s "vote" to see what you guys
want us to do with your stats. We will base our decision on the
results. We plan to do most of our decisions this way. We will give
the polls 15 days before close so that everyone can get a word,
opinion or concern in- Please note that our decisions WILL be based
on the votes and not the comments.

PRO Announcement ! Posted by Sin-Tex at 22:14
PM
News Source: X-ecuter
The Xecuter2 PRO has been upgraded
to support 2 x 512K BIOS images. So now you can have 1 x 1024k, 4 x
256k, 2 x 512k, and a mix between 1 x 512k & 2 x 256k. We had to
re write the software from scratch but managed to do it without ANY
hardware changes whatsoever - so production will not be delayed any
further. The PRO is now a true multi bios upgrade for both
developers and hobbyists alike.

Small Update! Posted by Sin-Tex at 18:38

Project
[Quote] Stay tuned, we will have a new

recent media frenzy we stopped the project to research the legal
aspect before preceding any further, it seemed ok until we started
receiving 75,000 unique hits per day. [End Quote]

Updates & Developments! Posted by Sin-Tex at 18:28
PM
News Source: X-ecuter
As you know we designed the X2 PRO
a while ago and its features have been public for quite some time.
The fact that it does not support 2 x 512k has been of some concern
recently due to the fact that future BIOS's will most probably be
based on 512k plus the tool is aimed at developers so of course they
would want to switch between different 512k BIOS's. So what we are
currently doing is redesigning the software to incorporate 2 x 512k
switching as well as 4 x 256k switching. To be honest this should
have been included from the beginning, we just didn't realize it
would be a factor, as much as an obvious factor it is. So the
release will be delayed for a week or so while we make any necessary
changes to the design. I'm sure that those wanting the PRO will not
mind this as we are only improving on the features that we have
advertised, its not like we're going back on anything we've said,
we're simply improving. To clear up a couple more issues YES the
LITE update cable is ready we're just polishing the software and
design and YES it will be posted for free, also the Pogo Pin adapter
as promised is also on its way. We had a 4 week lead time to wait
for the pins and of course no one has been here since the holidays
so contrary to any rumors yes of course it is on its way for those
that actually want it.
One final point, many say that when
you get the LITE cable then why bother with the PRO - well you've
not actually seen the full pro design yet - for the extra few bucks
you get complete multi switching plus an EXTERNAL adapter so you
never need go inside your XBOX ever again for programming or
switching purposes. It's a neat little adapter that we haven't
actually posted any pictures of yet, which I'm sure one of us will
find time to do tomorrow perhaps. We hope this answers the majority
of questions.

If you are running the Neo client atm , you can
uninstall it or decide to swith to the RSA-576 challenge. ( RSA-576
is not xbox related, but also a nice challenge worth cpu-time that
isn't used anyway ).

Update Posted by DCMASTER at
16:24 PM
Source: Team Xecuter
First of all we hope your
Christmas and New Year celerbrations went well. Now back to work
again....
As you all know (or may not know) the PRO has been
finished for a couple of weeks. The final design has been tested and
we're just in the middle of writing the GUI software for the PC
based tools.
However we've been following up on a lot of the
feedback you've been giving us regarding the bios Switching
process.
As of now the mod has 2 modes - 1024 and 256. In
1024 (1MB) mode it basically acts the same as the OpenBox (you can
run any BIOS that may ever be released - but just one at a time). In
256 mode you can run 4 x different 256k bios's, making this mod the
first real multi switcher.
Many have asked also for a 2 x
512k option. believe us its not as simple as it sounds. The logic
involved is resonably complex, however we're going to spend the next
week or so to see if we can add this function on at the last minute.
We were ready to launch this week, but of course we have to
listen to you guys and if you want a particular feature then we will
do our best to add it on for you.
If we can't add 2 x 512
then we will simply release the PRO in its current form. It's still
a fantastic design with a real nice external program and switch PCB
which is very effective - we'll post pictures for you today of the
final version.
Until then we thank you for your support and
will do our best to bring you more exciting innovations in the
coming months.
I can tell you we have started to design some
new hardware from scratch which we're very excited about
We'll update you as and when needed.

Dreamix Needs Help! Posted by Sin-Tex at 14:36
PM
News Source: XboxDeveloper.NET
Zpimpa is requesting
help from any good coders to speed things along.
"Thanks for
the support so far, but the Dreamix team needs your help. Right now
we are in need of coders to help speed up the software development
process. Also, those that are extremely knowledgable with both Xbox
and PC hardware, we need your help as well. Although we know video +
TV capture can be done with the using Hauppauge's WinTV USB PVR
device + USB Linux drivers (http://pvrusb.sf.net/), we are
looking for a more affordable alternative. Remember, the alternate
solution would have to include these three main features: TV tuner,
USB Compatibable, capture cababilities and have USB Linux drivers
(if not we can develop drivers but it will take time). If a suitable
USB device cannot be found, there is always the possibilty of
modifying the Xbox in some way to put the card on-board. However,
this would most likely be too difficult for the average user.
Finally, if anyone is interested in looking into bringing USB2 to
the Xbox, that would be of much help. This would increase the
capture rate which for WinTV PVR USB is currently (http://www.hauppauge.com/html/wintvpvrusb_datasheet.htm):
MPEG1 capture at 1150 Kbits/sec (Video CD data rate) MPEG2 capture
rates: 2MBit/sec, 4MBit/sec, 6Mbit/sec at full D1, plus S-VCD
(standard play, long play, extra long play) All help is welcome, but
finding a better alternative to the WinTV PVR USB device right now
is our main concern. Email me or contact me on IRC with any
questions or suggestions.
Website will be up
soon.

Project FAQ Posted by Sin-Tex at 12:27
PM
News Source: Xbox
Scene
"Neo Project FAQ by
Xantium"
* What is this project about
?
Find the private key MS uses to sign xbox
software. If this key has been found , it will be possible to run
homebrew software (like linux) without modchip on
xbox.
* What are the chances that we ever find this
key ?
Very , very small. It's a 2048bit RSA key.
(NOT RC4 , like some think). To get an idea , rsasecurity.com
says it would take 1year for 342million 500MHz Pentiums with 170Gb
RAM each to fully factorize a 1024bit number. A 2048bit key would
need 2^100 times more cpu-resources to be factorized in
1year... As you can see it looks pretty much impossible, but
there's a factor called chance, each key tried makes a chance to be
the right one. So the key could be found in 10000years , 1year ,
1month or in 1sec ... noone knows ;) While other people are
searching for other ways to run homebrew code without modchip , it
doesn't hurt to use idle cpu-time for this.
* Is it
legal?
As far as we know , yes. As stated on the
neo homepage: "Everything done on this project is for the sole
purpose of writing interoperable software under Sect. 1201 (f)
Reverse Engineering exception of the DMCA."
* I can't
reach their website.
They had alot of traffic
(double "slashdotted") , so try till you get
in. www.theneoproject.com or 66.11.166.150
* Where
can I donwload the latest version of Neo , so I can help search for
the key.
You can download it here
* How can I install this
program ?
Download it: here Install it. (very easy) Run
it. First time it will ask for username , email , ... Once
launched select "XBOX Public Key Challenge" at the bottom of the
programwindow.
* Will this program slowdown my PC
?
No - it runs standard as background proccess and
will only use Idle cpu-time , that means cpu-time that is not
currently in use by your main applications. You can also very
easily limit the cpu-power the program uses (Settings >
Preferences)
* How come that some people on the stats
managed to finish so many packets already ?
No idea
- it's strange some pc's (even slow ones) manage to check 100's of
keys per hour while most do about 2 per hour. We asked The Neo
Project for more info.
* How many keys in 1
packet?
400
* Where does the money go
if the key is found ?
100000USD will be given by
Michael Robertson (LindowsOS , ex mp3.com) - Xbox-Linux award
PartB. I don't think it complies with the rsasecurity.com 2048bit
RSA Challenge (200000USD) 'cause it doesn't use the public key given
by rsasecurity. They told us the money should be divided about
like their RSA-576 project , so it should look like this: -80% to
charity (chosen by user during sign-up) -10% of the money goes to
the person who's computer 'cracked' or 'completed' the current
project or challenge -10% goes to the NEO project for better
equipment, bandwidth, etc. -free xbox sent to the top 5
users
* What happens with the key if it's found? Will
it be available freely ?
Yes it will be available
freely.

Xecuter has released their latest app which is setup for bios image creation, md5 management, and x2 programming. Here is a description of the app provided by Team Xecuter.
"The XECUTER2 BIOS MANAGER (X2BM) is basically the first windows app that is dedicated to both Bios Image creation & management along with full and comprehensive BIOS programming functions. The great thing about this app is that you don't have to have an Xecuter mod to use it - it's free for everyone to use for all their BIOS Managment functions (good riddance to copy /b eh ? )"

More news on this kind of idle speculation and conjecture as we get it.

without any fuss, and it includes a mod disable switch as per the X2
LITE design. The factory in China will begin shipping to all
resellers around 25th January. One other design change has been made
to the X2:PRO External Controller, due to popular demand we have
made the PCB black to improve |
