    SensitiveX
Posted by Dr Zoidberg at 18:04 PM

Jaime Fuller has made a remake of the old Commodore 64 game Sensitive for the Xbox. The aim of the game is to guide a ball safely through a pathway without falling, destroying all the yellow blocks along the way. Teleporters & one way blocks add to the diffuculty of the task.

SensitiveX should be available for download from the usual places soon if not already. Check out the SensitiveX homepage for more info on this release.

    xSnes9x update !!!
Posted by Sin-Tex at 13:15 PM

    News Source xSnes9x

Been a while since my last update, more so, my last development update so sit back and read.

Before i proceed, a major development with the Snes9x windows version. DSP-2 emulation is almost complete which means Dungeon Master will finally be playable for the first time ever on any snes emulator. Props go out to Matthew Kendora, The Dumper and Overlord for doing all the hard work on this one!

ok back to me - lightgun emulation is coming along nicely, if a little slow..the calibration code and screen has been completed but im still coding the hooks into the core for superscope/justifier support. thats when the fun begins.

Next up we have the continuing rendering debate, ive decided to put this to bed forever because ive implemented Simple2x and AdvanceMame filters into xSnes9x. That should keep most people happy. The normal rendering will still be around, hell i might call it "classic" or something.

I,ve made some minor UI tweaks, ive added button images where text for buttons used to be. Check out http://www.lantus-x.com/images/sram1.JPG for a sample.

I,ve fixed a long standing Sprite Priority bug which should fix up some roms.

Finally, SMB share support - its still planned but i want to wrap up lightgun and rendering before i proceed with this.

Xbox and PC Comparisions By Team Xbox Linux
Posted by Wraggster at 0:24 AM

Some thing posted on Xbox Linux Site:

    Isn't it a Console?
Microsoft have been at some pains to describe the Xbox as a 'console'. But in fact the Xbox is a standard 'legacy-free' PC, except for some very minor changes which we will list here. The purpose of this article is to show that the Xbox is a PC, and that even Microsoft themselves do not think of it as a 'games console', but as a platform just like a PC. As we have reverse- engineered the device in great depth to get Xbox Linux working on it, we have some understanding of the design decisions that went into making it, and as we will show: the Xbox is a standard 'legacy-free' PC.
    'Legacy Free' PC
Legacy-free is a PC industry term to describe a motherboard which does not offer the traditional set of communication ports, such as Serial ports, Parallel Printer ports, PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports. Some Legacy-free PC designs even get rid of all PCI slots so the case need never be opened. Legacy-free PC motherboards instead replace all of these old IO systems with extra USB ports. In the longer term the old ports (especially the serial port, which is over 25 years old, uses weird voltages and works at a fraction of the speed of USB) is expected to disappear entirely from all motherboards. Companies like HP have been shipping a lot of legacy free PCs for a while now, they are an established and growing trend. Macintosh computers, which share a lot of the PC's design (PCI, AGP, IDE, USB, SDRAM...) did away with the legacy ports years ago.
    nVidia
nVidia were central to the design of the Xbox architecture. Not only did they design the graphics logic, which is widely known, but they were also responsible for the peripheral logic housed in a chip called MCPX, and the memory controller which is integrated with the video controller.

nVidia were a natural choice to do the work as they already planned to move into motherboard chipsets. You can buy today motherboards based on the nForce chipset, which bears a remarkable resemblance to the architecture of the Xbox. For example, on an nForce motherboard you will find a "Media and Communications Processor" or MCP chip, that contains most of the peripheral logic. In an Xbox you find the same chip, labelled MCPX.

So just how similar is an Xbox motherboard and an nVidia 420 nForce Chipset PC motherboard?

    XBMSP protocol & ccXStream Server
Posted by Sin-Tex at 23:46 PM

    News Source: Xbox Media Player

A new network protocol for media streaming named XB Media Streaming Protocol (XBMSP) developed by PuhPuh in discussion with RUNTiME & Pope-X has been integrated into the latest XboxMediaPlayer CVS (source code). XBMSP is a more simplistic & faster protocol than the XNS protocol currently used by XboxMediaPlayer. Though XBMSP has not replaced XNS it can be used by future XStream Servers to share media files to XboxMediaPlayer. PuhPuh has also developed XSteam test server called "ccXStream" that uses the XBMSP protocol. ccXStream comes in a Linux and a Windows version, you can grab these test servers from our download section (Note! ccXStream & XBMSP is not supported in XBMP 2.3).

The above is included in the cvs release mentioned below.

Xbox Media Player 21.02.03 CVS Release!

    What's New

    ****Changes Since 20.02.03****

Skin.xml updated. New graphics in Media dir (osd*.bmp) for new OSD feature.
Here's what's up w/ the OSD stuff. It's a keen new feature which allows
you to calibrate audio/video/volume/etc on a nice overlay over the video
clip you may be playing. This allows you to see what exactly "soften" does
(and other things) while the video is playing. It appears that this could
replace the "settings" menu altogether, if wanted. However, there's still
value in getting to these settings as we're used to. The graphics in this
OSD mode don't mesh with the rest yet, so they'll have an overhaul at some
point. A note regarding the skin.xml. For whatever reason, the default res
has been changed from 640x480 to 720x480. This gives us with a 4:3 television
a slight "squished" effect, although it's quite acceptable. You will have
to recalibrate your screen settings to have it fit your screen better.

Lastly, there will probably be some more code checked in today, but I'm
busy in the latter-half of the day, so I put out the build now. You can
    always wait for tommorow :)

    - fix switching between truetype & mplayer subtitles

    - first version of the OSD, graphics are not done yet and its still premature. Use white controller button to see the OSD

    - more osd changes

Source IRC, you can download it in the usual place.

    New XBMP Compile Released.
Posted by ABSENT at 23:56 PM

    Here are the release notes.

    2-13-2003:

There was a lack of CVS notes upon code checkin, but here's what I noticed. A few releases away *SHOULD* be the ability to act as a snapstream client, but it is DISABLED and you will not notice anything in the GUI for this for now. Please don't bother the developers about this feature as they are working on it. I also encountered a new strange "bug" on my network that may help someone get SMB running if they're having troubles. It doesnt seem to connect if your SMB server can't resolve the xbox by name. Samba was giving a Gethostbyaddr error, which cleared up once I added the xbox's ip/name to /etc/hosts.

    * XBMP now asks for confirmation when rebooting/exiting to dash
    * L/R triggers act as page up/down in large lists of file/dirnames
    * Thumbnail fixes
    * Config.xml new tags: , , and
    * Lang-1 updated (related to snapstream)

REMEMBER! SNAPSTREAM IS _NOT_ ACTIVE AND WILL NOT BE ANY TIME SOON! THERE IS NO REASON TO BOTHER DEVELOPERS ABOUT THESE FEATURES! I included information about this to prevent rampant rumors and speculation, as you can plainly see that there are snapstream tags in the config.xml.

    Mame-X Design thoughts ...
Posted by Sin-Tex at 23:32 PM

    News Source: Mame-X

I'm getting back into hooking up some new mame-x. So I thought I'd write this stuff down so those interested can follow development.

Back to B7. Due to my HD crash, and the MAME team kicking ass and romping through new versions of mame, i decided to take a aproach of a semi-re-port. Here are my reasons.

First of all B7 was hacked all to shit! I did some driver improvements, got some games working, added some HDTV stuff, and some spice to the game selection gui, but heres the dilemma. Due to trying to squeeze more ram, and after a few attempts at virtual memory failure, my approach was to segment all game drivers into sections, sections allow me to unload them and load them as needed, freeing up ram. So when you selected a game, only that game driver remained in memory. This worked good, saved about 9 megs of ram per game... One problem, over 1800 files needed #pragmas at the top, and bottom. Why is this a pain in the ass? Well as the MAME team releases new versions these files need updating instead of just replacing. Thats alot of work. So, as for not recovering the full source of b7 even. I'm going to dump this one in the gutter.

So what ARE we going to do? Well, my vision is 3 XBE files. 1 launcher, 1 neogeo/cps2 version, and 1 version without neogeo/cps2. Kinda like b6 but with the launcher extracted. Why? Well... what this allows me to do is to make a fancier launcher without fear of eating up ram, once we pick the game, we launch the trimmed xbe that only contains game code, so this frees up more ram for the games. This is good. Not alot of ram saved, but every little bit helps. When the game exits, it launches the launcher back at the place you left. The dual version in b6 seemed to work well in getting more games running, and i was holding back at creating a fancier launcher due to not wanting to eat up ram for the games.

Just thought I'd update everyone on whats going on, hopefully we are back on track soon and caught up with the MAME team for .64 I know there are some new games you guys are dying to bitch me out about because their isn't enough ram to run!

    We're back!

    Mame-X

Sorry for the downtime, dunno what happened to the hoster. Anyway, we are back folks. And as a personal status update, I'm about done moving to a new location, got net access back up and some machines back up... so i'm currently trying to get on the ball again.

On a MAME note, the MAME dev team has been kicking some ass... .64 is out for PC, that means we got some catching up to do.

Just wanted to make sure nobody thought this project was dead, sometimes personal issues just take precedence. Anyway. Nice to be back up!

    Mame X Update
Posted by Wraggster at 22:24 PM

Superfro has updated his MameX site which for those of you who dont know is a Mame emulator for the Xbox with this news:

I'm forced to replan the upgrade process of MAME, what the problem is, in the last version of b7 I had modified every driver and put it into a section so that it can be loaded and unloaded at will, so when you lauch a game, it would unload all other drivers that were unneeded and free up quite a bit of ram, problem with that is, there are like 1800 drivers, so as the MAME dev team updates, that means alot of headaches upgrading, I'm currently in the re-planning state of MAME-X.
