OpenXDK Help Needed
Posted by Wraggster at 12:19 PM

The excellent Caustik who is trying to bring a fully legal development environment to the Xbox Homebrew scene has posted this request for help:

Ok folks. Here is the deal: OpenXDK needs help. You do not need to be an official developer to contribute, I am just asking that people play with the code, hang out in #openxdk (efnet), and experiment with Graphics, Sound, etc. Currently I am working on USB support. This is a very big project, and if I want to move quickly, I can't really work on all the other libraries at the same time. Ideally, we would like some open source Graphic, Sound, and C runtime libraries ported over to OpenXDK. If you wish to help out, email me (caustik@hotmail.com) and join #openxdk on efnet.

ConfigMagic Beta 2 Released
Posted by DCMASTER at 0:21 AM

Source: Team Assembly

We just Released Beta 2 of ConfigMagic.. and as you can see the biggest thing in this release is V1.1 support..

NEW FEATURES & FIXES:

1. XBOX V1.1 Support added !!!

2. We no longer have ANY need to supply the eeprom RC4 key with #define, we "look" for the RC4 key elsewhere during runtime

3. When the HDD is Locked, a Master password of TEAMASSEMBLY is used, so if you screw up you can recover your hdd !!

4. Corrected a speling mistake in the .cfg file.. was "VideMode", corrected to "VideoMode"

5. Now mostly using JPG images to save a little on the footprint..

CURRENT FEATURES: (V1.0 AND V1.1)

You can update your XBOX EEPROM in one of three ways

1. Using a valid EEPROM.BIN file

You can "build" a new eeprom image from a configuration file

Edit your current, loaded (.bin) or built (.cfg) eeprom data "On-The-Fly"

2. You Can Lock and Unlock your HDD with the password created from your XBOX EEPROM

3. You can create backup of your current eeprom, HDD password and various other settings.

4. Security features will not allow a "bad" eeprom update, or update eeprom if HDD is still locked..

FUTURE FEATURES:

1. Support to Live Edit Confounder
2. Add some background Music
3. support for converting V1.0 eeprom images to v1.1 and vice versa..
4. Dumping current configuration to a Text file
5. Save current configuration as a .CFG file..

    * SRT subtitles are now working, including VobSub.
    * XBMP no longer crashes when switching between MPEG1/2 and DiVX/XViD.
    * Multi-file stacking no longer crashes with RelaX.
    * Multi-file stacking queues remaining files.
    * Powerdown now works on all bioses.
    * Decreased remote control button sensitivity (xboxdev).
    * Thumbnails are now working with RelaX virtual directories.
    * Albums has gone the way of the dodo, replaced with a more intelligent free-form mode, that shows covers whenever there are folders and a list view whenever their are just files.
    * Artists has been tested with the latest RelaX and works with virtual directories; note: in order to use this feature you must use the audio filename conventions
    * Number of frames drawn late has reduced by about 80% so things should appear to move very smoothly (certainly for AVI).

    Xbox Media Player 2 Released
Posted by Sin-Tex at 22:08 PM

    News Source: Xbox MediaPlayer

    Whats new in v2.0

So much stuff has changed that I'm not sure where to begin!

First almost everything was rewritten so all the old bugs reports don't apply! I'm certain that there will be new bugs.

The new core is mplayer based, thanks to frodo. As such is support MANY new codecs. However, all of the codecs in mplayer which required win32 directshow .dll's are not supported (yet).

4 channel digital output is in there. The new UI is even slightly different from the screenshots but all for the better. RUNTiME did an excellent job with it. It includes playlists, too.

You can even play unencrypted DVDs!

Compared to XBoxMediaPlayer v1.0, this new player is nothing similar.

    20 GB Xbox HD's
Posted by Sin-Tex at 21:57 PM

    News Source: XboxHacker.NET

Looks like us Europeans get a result, reports are coming in from people buying the Xbox v1.1 Pal that they have a 20 GB HardDrive

    Read Below

    "Griffe writes:

One of my friend bought a pal xbox 1.1(we are in FRANCE) with the JSRF+Sega GT bundle. And when we opended it to fit a matrix modchip, we found a seagate 20gb HD...

I thought that there was only 8gb and 10 gb HD in xboxes. Anyone else found a 20gb hd in his xbox ?

No idea where this came from, perhaps a refurb modded system that the previous owner accidently left a large drive in? Go figure. Havent heard any other reports of this, mail me if you do. Griffe should be supplying pictures of the drive tomorrow.

    UPDATE

    marcux adds:

with the 20 gig model.. The company I used to work for bought HDD's in bulk to put in prototyping machines.. the problem was.. the smallest HDD that we could buy was a 20 gig hdd... i can imagine that it's cost the same to make an 8 gig hdd that it does to make a 20.. we only used 5 megs of the 20 gig hdd's.. so i think what's going to happen are that new xbox being built are going to have 20 gig hdd in them..

Guess we can expect more of these to turn up once Microsoft's backlog of 8/10gb drives runs out. Almost like they support homebrew :)

    UPDATE

Been getting quite a few reports of these 20gb drives coming in. All PAL boxes."

Honestly I've been debating for a while whether I was going to post this news or wait a while longer. I guess I've decided.

Prior to getting into the xbox scene, I was designing a multimedia pc that would sit next to my TV and allow me to watch divx movies. When mod chips became available I saw the great potential of the xbox and voila! the rest is now history.

However, there was one design feature in my original multimedia pc that the xbox has never been able to do.

Some time ago, I began the arduous task of reverse engineering sections of the xdk with the purpose of adding the one feature truely missing from the xbox.

I now believe that I have come to the point where I *believe* that this new feature is actually possible. I don't know yet if it *will* be possible, there are still many big hurdles to overcome.

Ok, so you're probably wondering what I'm being long winded about. What I've been doing lately is trying to discover if its possible to use the XDK to send Usb packets to Usb devices attached to the Xbox. Usb devices otherwise not supported.

Still don't know where I'm going with this? Specifically, my ultimate goal is to add support for the WinTV PVR USB to XBoxMediaPlayer.

Yeah, I'm trying to add PVR support to the XBox.

There's a long ways to go on this project. Don't go out and by a WinTV PVR USB yet. There's still some serious hurdles to overcome. And still a lot more reverse engineering to do. There are linux drivers (which this will be based off of) but the linux driver is still in a very early state.

However I think its possible. Don't hold your breath, though. This is going to be a long ways coming.

    In Development

Many have been wondering what's going to happen next. Well the biggest thing going on around here right now is the neXgen dash. It's absolutely awesome and will eventually blow any competition out of the water. Expect a release shortly. Also our BIOS is having a few tweeks so you can expect a new release in the next day or so. We're also working on some different projects of interest which we'll talk about in more detail after Christmas. We're having fun right now with disassembling some very popular code which we think will benefit the scene by making it more "available" - a compressed XBE is good to no one so perhaps a complete strip down all the way to .asm maybe more fun?. Have a great Christmas - all updates will be posted on the forums by various members of the team, this news page is now closed for the holidays.

    EvoX Reveal Backdoor Secret

We awoke to find what we were hoping wouldn't happen. EvoX released the bios to support both console versions. Now many may think this is great, but we are very sad about this, and we're sure the Xbox Linux team are also. When we first cracked the v1.1, Xbox Linux and ourselves knew about the secret backdoor (actually a bug) in the Xbox that enabled us to crack it so fast. Of course the only way to conceal this was to release 2 x different BIOS's, but now the secret is out and the consequences won't be clear until a new version is released. We thought we'd tell you as you'd probably want to know why we wouldn't be cracking the next version in 2 days instead of 2 months. Aside from this nice to see you improved the sloppy upload speed and fixed the skin bug (oh and thanks for the credit on the IGR function hmmmm), we hope to see even more improvements in future. Also well done to PiXEL8 for solving the true VGA output problem.

    New Evolution-X Dashboard & Bios
Posted by Sin-Tex at 23:13 PM

    News Source: Evo-X Hackz

    EvolutionX bug fixes:

Fix crash when using backup function on v1.1 boxes

    FTP Speed improvements:

You will only notice an improvement on some combinations of HDD and XBox.

If you are already getting 5000K/s uploading to XBOX, don't expect more.

    FTP Filename check:

Transferring files with FATX incompatible file names will now produce an error

    FTP CWD command fixed.

SNTP : Now it can run with @NetClock Server

Skin Image Quality improved with 640x480 images (no more stretching)

    EvolutionX new features:

    In Game Reset:

We bring you In Game Reset with the RemoteX dashboard (no need to upgrade your bios for this function)

IGR is availale in 3 modes (Select from Settings Menu):

FTP IGR -> When you launch from FTP Client e.g. execute f:\mame\deafult.xbe
RDTools IGR -> When you launch from VC++
MISC IGR -> IGR when launching normally
If you want IGR in original games you have to use the Launch DVD function from RemoteX or enable Auto Launch Game and insert the DVD when you are in RemoteX dashboard.

    Telnet Server:

A very limited (so far) telnet server.
    Functions available are:
PCIDUMP, IODUMP, MEMDUMP, CDSECTORDUMP, HDDSECTORDUMP, O, DIR, QUIT, EXIT

    Date Swap:
    Swap dd/mm/yyyy -> mm/dd/yyyy

    AutoSize bios file:

Evox will now automatically autosize the bios image to fit the flash type e.g.
    256 -> 512 ; 256 -> 1024 ; 512 -> 1024

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    EVOX D.6 BIOS:

First dual BIOS ever released which supports both V1.0 and V1.1 boxes (no more confusion)
Offcourse this bios is only 256K so it can be used with your Matrix or Cheapmod solution.

All features of BIOS 2.6 / 3.6 included
D.6 with Eject Fix also included in this release.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

We have so many ideas and work in progress, and we will continue to bring you the best dashboard for the XBOX.
Stay with EvoX for the best possible XBOX experience ;)

    Media X Menu 0.9c
Posted by Sin-Tex at 22:56 PM

    News Source: XboxHacker BBS

    What's new?

    Beta 0.9c
    * Added the ability to navigate using the thumbsticks
    * Fixed the PersistDisplay() issue. Loading screens now display.
    * WMV is now a supported format! The videos will loop, and sound is disabled
in this release by default. I'll add parameters to change those (sound does
work) shortly. WMV files can be used ANYWHERE an image file is used.
Thanks go out to Syn3rgy @ the xboxhacker.net forums for knocking down the
    remaining barriers on this feature.
    * Moving away from ini files. XML will be the new standard (faster loading)
To make things easier, I've included a converter, to modify existing files to
    the new format.
    * Disable for auto-config - Set Main->AllowAutoConfig to No (or Off/false)
    * Main->MoveDelay - Time between pressing down/up and the menu changing selections in Repeat mode.
    * Main->RepeatDelay - Time between holding down/up and the program repeating the move.
    * Main->LoadSkin parameter to select a specific skin (Based on directory name)
    * Main->ExitApp allows you to specify a dashboard other than the 'default' one, such
as "C:\evoxdash.xbe" when using the dashboard sequence. This solves a problem
when using MXM as your default dashboard application.
    * Well, a lot of work, but I've sped things up a bit (well, not really sped up, as
much as shuffled things around) and added a nice fade in to a moving sky and MXM logo
just before hitting the title screen.
    * Smooth transitions now occur between menu states
    * the slight "stutter" from the music when MXM starts up is now fixed.

Media X Menu (MXM) is a program selector system for the Xbox.

It can be run from hard drive or on DVD compilations, and was intended to surpass Complex's MenuX system (and most agree, it does!)

Music, more skinning options, and even a screen saver!

    Mame-X beta 7 delayed :-(
Posted by Sin-Tex at 21:09 PM

    News Source: Mame-X

Sad news people, mame-x b7 will be delayed due to unfortunate circumstances.

"... Sorry for the late post on thanks giving, but I was out of town visiting family. Happy thanks giving everyone.

Ok, on to the 'sort of not really' part. The day before thanksgiving when I left to visit family... my nice shiny Western Digital 120 gig drive died. And yeap, you guessed it... all my xbox related content was on that drive, including all the mame source. Especially the beta 7 that was just about ready for public release. As well as alot of the other projects you guys know I do, and some projects I was working on that weren't released yet and nobody knew about them goodies. So I'm at a big loss right now. This is going to delay the next version of beta 7. I do have a copy that was a little past beta 6 so it's not like I have to start from b6 again, but still. My 'other works' that were in development will have to be recoded from scratch again. I havn't lost faith tho, I will be working hard to get the mame ball rolling again... Just thought I'd share my grief with everyone first...

    Team Assembly: XB Live update
Posted by Sin-Tex at 11:22 AM

    News Source: Team Assembly

Ok, lets give you all an update on what has been happening.. First off, changing JUST the serial, mac won't get you back online.. We only changed the serial + MAC on a non banned system to see if XB Live was checking serial.. and it was not.. we had a "generated" serial and MAC and Live was still happy.. so after some more work it was established that it is based on the encrypted 16-byte HDD Key that is used to calculate your HDD Password.. You change this and you are back online ! It has to be valid 16-Byte Key though.. we think MS generates these and checks for validity.. And if yours is invalid or banned, your screwed.. You have to get one from a non banned system at this stage.. we are working on it though..

Right, now for the scoop on ConfigMagic:
Work is slow on this, we have been hard at work on the XB Live stuff. Never the less, we have the "framework" pretty much done .. ConfigMagic will currently allow you to change: Serial, MAC, Online Key, HDD Key. It will also generate your HDD Passwords for you if you want to lock/unlock your drive.. We are also integrating EEPROMagic into this App so you can do EEPROM backups/restores with it as well.. You can also "generate" a complete new EEPROM Image from a config file..

Things we'd like to add before we release is being able to Lock/Unlock your HDD and then of course a pretty little menu.. currently its all text based. :(

We released the first screen shots:
